There is a great need to know what is tinnitus because of the growing number of cases of people acquiring or having such disease. Tinnitus is the term used for the ringing in the ear. It can be caused by different factors and its cure vastly varies. Some considers tinnitus as a symptom rather than a disease. It could signify something, probably a more serious ear problem. Kind of like the pain, tinnitus signals the body that something is wrong. It leads to investigation of the involved organ making it possible for the examiners and the person involved knowing if the ear is as healthy as it should be. Just like pain, tinnitus is highly subjective and only the person experiencing it can say how severe or mild the tinnitus is. Tinnitus can be perceived in one or both ear. It can also be continuous or intermittent. Continuous tinnitus can cause a great irritation to the person that can sometimes lead to emotional disturbances. Not only does this affect the person emotionally, it also disrupts the peaceful sleep of a person – making it hard for the body to rest.
There are diagnostic tests done to determine the severity of tinnitus. It is also examined if the tinnitus has affected the hearing ability of the individual. In some cases, tinnitus can be termed as objective. This is because the clinician was able to find evidences that a tinnitus is present. One of this evidence is a sound emanating from the person’s ear is perceived by the clinician. This called sound like a bruit – a swinging sound.
Tinnitus could be caused by different factors. The most common cause of this is the exposure to loud sound or music. Prolonged exposure to loud noise can be damaging to the ears and it could cause tinnitus. Some tinnitus is caused by medications which has an ototoxic effect. This means that such drugs could be dangerous to the ears especially in high dosages. Aside from noise and medications, some people who are prone to trauma in the head, like boxers can also develop tinnitus and other ear problems.
The ear is a small organ of the body that allows us to enjoy one of life’s great joys – music. The simple perception of hearing things is often left unnoticed and unappreciated. It is not enough that we know what causes tinnitus and other ear problems. It is also very important to avoid these predisposing factors to keep our ear healthy and our hearing intact.
Now that we already know what is tinnitus, let us not stop from there. I am sure that people who have tinnitus have known how important it is to take care of our ears. It is a basic fact that ears and other organs should be taken cared of. If we disregard our responsibilities of taking care of our ears, a small but important sense organ of our body, we may suffer not only tinnitus, which is milder compared to other hearing disease, but even complete hear loss. Once hearing ability is lost, it is lost. Therefore, knowing what is tinnitus and what are its causes can serve us our warning for even greater ear damage to come if we continue abusing our hearing organ.
