Tinnitus is often times referred to as the ringing sound perceived by a person in one or both ears. It can be diagnostically proven because there are objective types of tinnitus. This means that some diagnostic test can actually prove its presence in the ears. But most often than not, only the report of the individual experiencing tinnitus is all there is. So most clinicians prefer to measure its severity before it can create further disruption and damage to the life and activities of a person. The amplitude of the tinnitus is measured by allowing the person to listen to sounds in different amplitudes. This is because tinnitus actually affects the hearing. If a person can not hear other sound except the ringing or buzzing sound in his or her ears, it might actually cause other problems, even accidents.
Tinnitus can be a constant sound heard or something that comes up when triggered. There are many factors that cause tinnitus. It could be caused by ototoxic drugs, very loud noise or other ear problems. It is very important to know the exact cause of tinnitus to know the steps to be taken to treat it. This is the reason why tinnitus is often said to be a symptom rather than a disease in itself. But whether or not it is indeed a disease, it sure causes many problems in a person’s daily living.
Tinnitus is very annoying. It can affect the ability of a person to communicate, simply because it overrides other sounds that enter the ears. It can also irritate the person so much that sometimes it prevents sleep. This further worsens the problems of the person. This is because a person who lacks sleep tends to be more irritable and less reasonable. So if tinnitus is experienced please remember its cause and try not to expose yourself to it to prevent the tinnitus from coming back.
The best way to handle tinnitus is to prevent it from happening. The ears may comprise a relatively small part of the body but its function is vital in the social life and basically the life of an individual. It is of vital importance therefore to take care of the ears and the things it is exposed to. Even the medications we take must always be noted. It is even advisable to consult a doctor before taking medications, even over the counter ones.
Example of an over the counter drug which is ototoxic are aspirins and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. This is because physicians know what drugs can cause damage to the ears and different parts of the body and as to how much of it is safe for usage.
There are many treatments available nowadays to treat tinnitus. But not all of them are safe or guaranteed to be successful. With a problem such as tinnitus, one can only hope and try to prevent it. But if it really happens, most clinicians want to know its cause first before starting treatment. So to keep the person from losing sleep, it is usually suggested that relaxation techniques are taught and music be played during hours of sleep.
